What this sleep calculator actually does
Tell it when you need to wake up, and it works backward. Sleep doesn't run at a constant depth all night — it moves in cycles of about 90 minutes, each one carrying you down from light sleep into slow-wave deep sleep and back up through REM. This calculator counts whole cycles back from your alarm and adds a 15-minute buffer to fall asleep, then hands you a short list of target bedtimes.1
The idea is simple: land your wake-up at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, rather than being yanked out of the deep middle. The bedtimes for five and six cycles are flagged as recommended because five to six cycles — 7.5 to 9 hours — is where most adults belong.2
You can run it the other way too. If your bedtime is fixed, switch to the bedtime mode and it projects forward to the wake times that fall on a cycle boundary.
Why waking between cycles feels better
You already know the feeling: two alarms, twenty minutes apart, and the one that catches you at the wrong moment leaves you wrecked for half an hour. That is sleep inertia — the grogginess, slowed thinking, and heavy-limbed reluctance that follows waking out of deep sleep.3
Waking at the light, surfacing end of a cycle sidesteps most of it. This is the counterintuitive part the calculator exists to surface:

Notice that 7.5 hours can beat 8. That is not a trick of the numbers; it is the difference between waking at a cycle boundary and waking a third of the way into the next one.
The fall-asleep buffer
The calculator assumes about 15 minutes between lights-out and actual sleep — sleep onset latency, in the jargon. That 15 minutes is why a bedtime of 10:45 PM is not the same as being asleep at 10:45.
If you regularly take much longer than 20 minutes to drop off, treat that as its own signal rather than padding the buffer. Long onset latency is one of the most common places sleep quietly leaks, and the usual culprits are addressable: caffeine still circulating, a screen an inch from your face, or a mind that only starts working the day's problems once the lights go out. The honest caveat: cycles vary
Ninety minutes is an average, not a law. Real cycles run somewhere between 80 and 100 minutes, and they change shape across the night — the first cycles are rich in deep sleep, the last ones weighted toward REM.1 Your own average may sit a little above or below 90, and it drifts with age, sleep debt, alcohol, and stress.
So read these times the way you'd read a tide table for a beach you've never visited: broadly right, precisely uncertain. The move is to pick the bedtime that fits your evening, hold it for a week, and pay attention to how you wake. If you consistently feel best waking slightly earlier or later than the tool suggests, your cycle simply isn't exactly 90 minutes — adjust and trust your own mornings over the arithmetic.
Two things this calculator deliberately does not claim:
- It can't detect what stage you're in. Unlike a wearable that guesses from movement and heart rate, it has no data about tonight in particular — only the average model. A cheap alarm and consistent timing often beat stage-guessing gadgets anyway.
- It can't fix a sleep shortage. Timing your wake-up well makes six hours feel better; it does not make six hours be eight. If you're chronically short, the timing trick is a bandage over a debt.
Timing is the cheap part; enough sleep is the point
Getting the wake-up right is a genuine, free improvement — it costs nothing to wake at 6:30 instead of 6:45 if 6:30 lands on a cycle. But it's the smaller lever. The bigger one is total sleep, night after night, and that's where most of us are actually losing.
