One question, answered with a clock time
The caffeine half-life calculator answers "how much is still in me at bedtime?" This tool answers the more actionable flip side: "what's the latest I can have my usual drink and still sleep clean?" The output is a single time — your caffeine cutoff — plus the same cutoff for every common drink at your settings, so you can see at a glance that the green tea is fine at 4 PM while the cold brew needed to stop before lunch.
The math: half-lives, run backwards
Caffeine leaves your system by exponential decay — each half-life clears half of what remains.1 The cutoff calculation just runs that in reverse:
- Pick a bedtime threshold. How much caffeine can be circulating at lights-out before it bothers your sleep? The tool offers three: sleep-sensitive (20 mg — under a quarter-cup), typical (40 mg), tolerant (75 mg).
- Count the halvings. A 140 mg drip coffee decaying to 35 mg needs two half-lives. A 200 mg cold brew to 20 mg needs more than three.
- Count back from bedtime. At a typical 5-hour half-life, two halvings is 10 hours: bedtime 11 PM → cutoff 1 PM.
That's why the cutoff moves so sharply with dose and metabolism: doubling the drink adds a full half-life to the wait, and a slow metabolizer's 8-hour half-life nearly doubles every distance a typical person needs.
Is a cutoff really necessary?
The evidence says the afternoon coffee is doing more than most people think. In a controlled study, 400 mg of caffeine taken a full 6 hours before bed still cut measured sleep by about an hour — while participants' own estimates barely noticed it.2 A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis worked out the dose-timing gradient: to leave sleep untouched, a standard cup of coffee needed about 8.8 hours of distance from bedtime, and a large pre-workout-scale dose (~200 mg+) needed 13+.3
Two details from that literature are worth keeping:
- You won't feel the damage. The subjective buzz fades hours before the molecule clears, and caffeinated sleep loss reliably beats people's own estimates of it.2 "I fall asleep fine" mostly tests sleep onset; the losses show up in depth and continuity.4
- The spread between people is real, not folklore. The CYP1A2 enzyme variant that separates fast from slow metabolizers can nearly triple the half-life — which is exactly the fast/typical/slow setting in the tool. Set it honestly. If evening espresso genuinely never touches you, you're likely fast; if a 3 PM cup wires you, you're likely slow.
Using your cutoff
Treat the time as a curfew, not a ban. The highest-leverage version of this change keeps your total caffeine identical and only moves it earlier — you lose nothing you'll miss by evening, because the late-day doses were mostly maintaining dependence rather than adding lift.
If the cutoff feels impossible — if 2 PM you needs the coffee — that need is usually information. The honest limits: this is a one-drink model with population averages — multiple drinks stack (use the half-life calculator for the full day), café doses vary widely, and no calculator can see your actual enzyme activity. Pregnancy and some medications can more than double clearance time; if that's you, lean slow and treat the cutoff as the latest defensible time, not a target.
