What it is

The latest clock time you can have your usual drink and still be under your caffeine threshold at bedtime — a personal caffeine curfew.

How it works

It runs half-life decay backwards: given your drink’s dose, your metabolism, and how much caffeine your sleep tolerates at lights-out, it counts the halvings needed and subtracts that many hours from bedtime. A 140 mg coffee to 35 mg is two half-lives — 10 hours at typical speed.

One question, answered with a clock time

The caffeine half-life calculator answers "how much is still in me at bedtime?" This tool answers the more actionable flip side: "what's the latest I can have my usual drink and still sleep clean?" The output is a single time — your caffeine cutoff — plus the same cutoff for every common drink at your settings, so you can see at a glance that the green tea is fine at 4 PM while the cold brew needed to stop before lunch.

The math: half-lives, run backwards

Caffeine leaves your system by exponential decay — each half-life clears half of what remains.1 The cutoff calculation just runs that in reverse:

  1. Pick a bedtime threshold. How much caffeine can be circulating at lights-out before it bothers your sleep? The tool offers three: sleep-sensitive (20 mg — under a quarter-cup), typical (40 mg), tolerant (75 mg).
  2. Count the halvings. A 140 mg drip coffee decaying to 35 mg needs two half-lives. A 200 mg cold brew to 20 mg needs more than three.
  3. Count back from bedtime. At a typical 5-hour half-life, two halvings is 10 hours: bedtime 11 PM → cutoff 1 PM.

That's why the cutoff moves so sharply with dose and metabolism: doubling the drink adds a full half-life to the wait, and a slow metabolizer's 8-hour half-life nearly doubles every distance a typical person needs.

Is a cutoff really necessary?

The evidence says the afternoon coffee is doing more than most people think. In a controlled study, 400 mg of caffeine taken a full 6 hours before bed still cut measured sleep by about an hour — while participants' own estimates barely noticed it.2 A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis worked out the dose-timing gradient: to leave sleep untouched, a standard cup of coffee needed about 8.8 hours of distance from bedtime, and a large pre-workout-scale dose (~200 mg+) needed 13+.3

Two details from that literature are worth keeping:

  • You won't feel the damage. The subjective buzz fades hours before the molecule clears, and caffeinated sleep loss reliably beats people's own estimates of it.2 "I fall asleep fine" mostly tests sleep onset; the losses show up in depth and continuity.4
  • The spread between people is real, not folklore. The CYP1A2 enzyme variant that separates fast from slow metabolizers can nearly triple the half-life — which is exactly the fast/typical/slow setting in the tool. Set it honestly. If evening espresso genuinely never touches you, you're likely fast; if a 3 PM cup wires you, you're likely slow.

Using your cutoff

Treat the time as a curfew, not a ban. The highest-leverage version of this change keeps your total caffeine identical and only moves it earlier — you lose nothing you'll miss by evening, because the late-day doses were mostly maintaining dependence rather than adding lift.

If the cutoff feels impossible — if 2 PM you needs the coffee — that need is usually information. The honest limits: this is a one-drink model with population averages — multiple drinks stack (use the half-life calculator for the full day), café doses vary widely, and no calculator can see your actual enzyme activity. Pregnancy and some medications can more than double clearance time; if that's you, lean slow and treat the cutoff as the latest defensible time, not a target.

Frequently asked questions

What time should I stop drinking caffeine?+

It depends on three things this calculator asks for: your bedtime, the size of the dose, and how fast you clear it. A widely cited controlled study found caffeine taken even 6 hours before bed measurably cut sleep, and a 2023 meta-analysis put the safe distance for a standard cup of coffee closer to 8–9 hours. For a typical metabolizer with an 11 PM bedtime, that lands the last full coffee somewhere between noon and 3 PM — earlier for slow metabolizers and bigger drinks.

How does the calculator work out my cutoff time?+

It runs caffeine’s exponential decay backwards. You pick a bedtime threshold (how much caffeine your sleep can tolerate at lights-out) and the tool computes how many half-lives your drink needs to decay below it, then counts back from bedtime. Example: a 140 mg coffee decaying to 35 mg needs two halvings; at a 5-hour half-life that’s 10 hours, so for an 11 PM bedtime the cutoff is 1 PM.

Why is my cutoff earlier than my friend’s?+

Mostly the CYP1A2 liver enzyme. A common gene variant splits people into fast (~3-hour half-life) and slow (~8-hour) caffeine metabolizers, and the cutoff scales directly with half-life: the same cold brew that clears by bedtime for a fast metabolizer can need a mid-morning curfew for a slow one. Pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and some medications slow clearance further; smoking speeds it up.

Does tea or cola need a cutoff too?+

Smaller doses need less lead time, which the drink grid on this page makes concrete. A green tea at 28 mg may already be under your bedtime threshold — “any time” — while a 200 mg cold brew can need 12+ hours. The math is the same; only the starting dose changes. Watch out for the sleeper doses: a 16 oz energy drink carries more caffeine than most coffees.

I fall asleep fine after evening coffee — do I still need a cutoff?+

Falling asleep is the least sensitive test. Caffeine’s better-documented cost at moderate bedtime levels is to sleep quality: lighter, more fragmented sleep and less deep sleep, which you feel the next day as “slept 8 hours, still tired.” Some genuinely fast metabolizers are fine — set the tool to fast and see — but if your sleep feels thinner than the hours suggest, the evening dose is the first suspect worth testing.

What should I do if my afternoon runs on coffee?+

Keep the total, move the timing: the same daily caffeine taken before your cutoff usually preserves the lift and spares the night.
