How it works

Getting the most from it

What white noise actually is

White noise is the sound of every audible frequency playing at once, at roughly equal power. The name borrows from optics: just as white light holds every color of the spectrum together, white noise holds every pitch — low, middle, and high — in equal measure. What your ear hears is a bright, even hiss, the sound of an untuned radio or a fan cranked up.

That flat spectrum is the whole point. Because there is energy everywhere across the range, white noise can cover up an intruding sound anywhere in that range — a door, a voice, a car — by raising the background floor until the intrusion no longer stands out. That masking effect, not any magic frequency, is what white noise is genuinely good at.

What the evidence says (honestly)

It is tempting to sell white noise as a sleep cure. The research does not support that. The best current summary — a 2021 systematic review of noise as a sleep aid — found that the studies are mostly small, low in quality, and inconsistent, with some even suggesting continuous noise can slightly worsen sleep quality.1 So the strong, evidence-backed claim is narrow: white noise helps when there is a noise problem to mask.

Where it earns its keep is exactly there. A study of patients trying to sleep in a loud ICU found that adding white noise reduced the number of awakenings caused by peak noises — not by being soothing, but by shrinking the gap between the background and the disruptive sound, so the disruption no longer crossed the waking threshold.2 If your sleep is broken by a snoring partner, street traffic, or a thin wall, white noise has a real mechanism working for you. In a genuinely quiet room, expect less.

When white noise is the right choice

Reach for white noise when the problem is intermittent, higher-pitched sound you want to bury: voices carrying, keyboard clatter in an open office, a TV through the wall, birdsong at 5 a.m. Its bright, full spectrum overlaps those sounds well, which is why it masks them more completely than the deeper noises.

Many people also use it for focus. A steady sound floor smooths over the little auditory interruptions that fragment concentration, so a shared workspace feels more like a private one. This is individual, though — a minority find the brightness itself distracting and do better in near-silence or with a deeper noise.

Which noise for what — a quick comparison

The three "colored" noises are the same idea with the treble dialed differently:

  • White noise — flat, bright, strong high frequencies. Best all-round masker, especially for higher-pitched intrusions. Evidence is moderate and mostly about masking.
  • Pink noise — the highs softened into a balanced, rainfall-like sound. This one has the best sleep evidence of the group, including small studies on deep sleep and memory. A gentler default than white.
  • Brown noise — the highs rolled off much further into a deep, oceanic rumble. Hugely popular online for focus and ADHD, though the formal evidence there is still thin and emerging — enjoy it, but hold the claims loosely.
  • Ocean sounds and rain sounds — natural, rhythmic textures that add calming associations on top of masking. Good when you want something that feels like a place, not a hiss.

A fair rule of thumb: white noise to block sound, pink noise to sleep, brown noise to settle, and the nature sounds when you want the noise to feel like somewhere.

  • Set the volume just above the thing you are masking, and no higher. The goal is to close the gap between background and intrusion, not to fill the room. Louder is not better and, over a full night, quieter is kinder to your ears.
  • Use the sleep timer if you only want cover while you fall asleep. Once you are under, the room is usually quiet enough that the noise has done its job. The timer fades the sound out rather than cutting it abruptly.
  • Give it about a week. Whether white noise helps you specifically is an experiment only you can run. Some nervous systems settle under a bright hiss; others want the deeper end of the spectrum. If white feels too sharp, step down to pink or brown.

Parents reach for white noise early, and it can genuinely help a newborn who is used to the loud, whooshing environment of the womb. Two cautions matter more than the benefit: keep the device well away from the crib and the volume low — general guidance is to stay under roughly 50 decibels measured at the baby — and do not run it loud all night, since sustained high-volume exposure has been raised as a possible hearing concern.3 Quieter and farther away is the safe default.
